The Perfect Storm of Bad News and Planning Opportunities for 2020 & Beyond: Crucial Planning Decisions for the 99%

The vast majority of clients will not be subject to federal transfer taxes in 2020 – but they need our advice now – possibly more than ever. 2020 presents a “perfect storm” of bad news and planning opportunity. The effects of illness and economic disruption from the pandemic must be addressed. New laws have been enacted that require the client’s attention. A client’s estate and tax plan that made sense one or more years ago may not be right now. As if this were not enough to consider, we are facing the political risk of the 2020 election which could bring fundamental changes in tax laws affecting all clients – not only the wealthiest. What should we be telling our clients now? In his exclusive LISI Webinar, Steven Siegel will address the essential conversations advisors should be having with clients. Topics that Steve will address include the following:

  • Have clients addressed “basic”, but essential immediate planning needs?

  • Using Available Transfer Tax Exclusions while we can.

  • Planning Gifting to avoid “sunset” and reduction of the current exclusions.

  • Will a decedent’s DSUE be acknowledged – and preserved?

  • Business succession planning – Valuation and Discount opportunities.

  • Taking advantage of planning with record low interest rates.

  • Time to exercise stock options?

  • What is the state of the client’s retirement planning? Has there been discussion about SECURE Act and CARES Act issues and opportunities?

  • Discussion of a possible Roth Conversion for clients in the “income valley."

  • What thought has been given to income tax and basis planning?

  • What has the client done with life insurance policies?

  • The threat posed by possible political change.
